What to Do When Your Baby Won’t Cooperate for Photos:
Expert Tips Every Mom Should Know

If you’re a mom planning a photoshoot and feeling nervous about how your baby will behave, you’re in good company. Almost every mom worries their little one might cry, fuss, refuse to sit still, or simply not “perform” the way they hope. The truth is, babies are beautifully unpredictable — and that’s exactly what makes their photos so meaningful. A great session doesn’t require a perfectly calm baby; it simply requires patience, flexibility, and a photographer who understands how babies communicate. This guide will walk you through what to expect, how to prepare, and how to stay calm so you can enjoy the experience and walk away with images you’ll treasure forever.
Babies are naturally expressive, curious, and full of personality — even when they’re tiny. Some stare wide‑eyed at everything, some wiggle nonstop, and some give the sweetest little pouts. These real, unscripted moments often become the most cherished images because they capture your baby exactly as they are. You don’t need a perfectly posed baby to get beautiful photos; you just need authenticity.
What this really means for you:
-
Natural expressions are often the most beautiful
-
Wiggles, movement, and curiosity are welcome
-
Your baby doesn’t need to smile on command
-
Real moments tell the real story of your baby
Babies Don't need to follow a script
This little guy had all the cutest expressions during his newborn photoshoot! He was awake for half and asleep for the other half, which made it to where I could get really adorable portraits of his full personality! Mom loved seeing his hilarious, curious expressions, the tiny tear on cheek, and his long baby lashes as he slept so peacefully! There are so many ways to capture your baby no matter what state they are in during the session!
Comfort Items and Calming Tools Make a Big Difference
Familiar comforts can help your baby feel safe in a new environment. Whether it’s a favorite blanket or a soothing sound, these small touches can help your baby settle and relax. Many moms love playing calming music during the session — something soft and familiar that creates a peaceful atmosphere. One of my personal favorites is “Weightless” by Marconi Union, which is known for its calming effect. Soft piano lullabies or gentle white noise can also work wonders.
Helpful things to bring:
A favorite blanket or soft toy
A pacifier or teether
A familiar book
A bottle or snack
Calming music (lullabies, white noise, or your baby’s favorite soothing track)
.
fussing is normal and never a problem
Babies communicate through movement and sound, so fussing is completely normal. A little crying doesn’t derail the session — it simply means your baby needs a moment. There’s always time for feeding, soothing, diaper changes, or cuddles. Sessions are designed to flow around your baby’s needs, not force them into a schedule. You’re never on a timer, and you’re never being judged! I love everything about photographing a little squish!
What to expect during the session – whether your baby is a newborn or a toddler
Plenty of time for breaks
A flexible, baby‑led pace
Space for feeding or soothing
Zero pressure for “perfect behavior”
Your baby feels what you feel!
Babies are incredibly intuitive — they pick up on your energy. If you’re anxious, they sense it. If you’re calm, they soften into that calm. Taking a moment to breathe and ground yourself before the session can make a world of difference for both of you. Play a calming song you love, take a slow breath in and a longer breath out, and remind yourself that nothing needs to be perfect.
Simple ways to stay calm:
Take slow, deep breaths
Play your favorite calming song
Focus on connection, not performance
Remind yourself that your baby is already doing great
Remember that capturing who they are in whatever stage they’re at, creates the best memories for the future!
The Baby session workflow
Look at all those baby expressions! I love to capture them in their most natural state! During a baby session with me, I create space to capture their laughs, cries, pouts, sleepiness, and tiny details all in one! This is how I create beautifully varied galleries for you to cherish years down the line, when those chubby cheeks aren’t so chubby anymore, or when they’re all grown up and ready to have their own babies! I don’t put a time limit on baby sessions. There is plenty time to handle everything as they come up! No stress 🙂
During the beginning of most of my baby sessions, they start off shy, nervous, and wanting to cling to mom! The beginning is usually where I capture the pouts and teary eyes! Then, about 15 minutes into the session, they warm up to me and begin to show more and more of their personality! So, don’t worry if your baby has a rough start. That’s completely normal and adds beautiful variety to your gallery! Almost all of my clients include the crying photo in their collection and many even turn that one into wall art! Because they’re babies, and those little faces are so precious!
The Magic Happens in the In‑Between Moments
Some of the most heart‑melting photos happen when your baby isn’t “posing” at all. A sleepy yawn, a tiny stretch, a curious stare, or the way they melt into your arms — these moments can’t be staged, and they often become the most cherished images. Babies are naturally photogenic when they’re simply being themselves.
Beautiful moments we look for:
Soft pouts
Sleepy expressions
Snuggles with mom or dad
Natural curiosity
Tiny movements and gestures
Embrace them all!
There is only support, not pressure!
Your baby isn’t “difficult.” You’re not doing anything wrong. And you’re not inconveniencing anyone. Every baby has their own rhythm, and a good photographer knows how to work with it. You and your baby are already doing everything right simply by showing up.
Remember:
You’re not alone
You’re not being judged
Your baby is perfect exactly as they are
The goal is connection, not perfection
Why Every Expression Matters — and Why Your Photos Deserve to Be Printed
One of my favorite things about photographing babies here in the Atlanta area — whether it’s Kennesaw, Marietta, Acworth, or Woodstock — is how many different expressions they give us. Babies don’t stay in one mood for long, and that’s the beauty of it. The tiny pout, the curious stare, the sleepy blink, the scrunched‑up cry, the sudden smile… each one is a real part of who they are right now.
And because these moments are so fleeting, they deserve to be printed and enjoyed — not lost in a phone gallery. Albums, folio boxes, and wall art turn those expressions into something you can hold, display, and pass down. Even the “imperfect” moments often become the ones families treasure most once they’re printed.
Why printing matters:
Babies change incredibly fast
Every expression tells a different piece of their story
Printed artwork becomes part of your home
Albums and folio boxes preserve the full range of moments
Wall art lets you enjoy your favorite expression every day
No matter how your baby handles the session — calm, wiggly, serious, or silly — those expressions are worth preserving in a way that lasts.
Conclusion
Your baby doesn’t need to cooperate perfectly for your photos to be perfect. They just need to be themselves! These early days are full of real, raw, beautiful moments, and those are the ones worth capturing. If you’re feeling nervous or unsure, I’m here to guide you every step of the way.
If you’re ready to create meaningful, heartfelt images of your little one — even on their fussiest days — I’d love to photograph your family. Reach out anytime, and let’s create something beautiful together.
