Choosing the Best Setting for your portraits

When it comes to portrait photography, lighting and location isn’t just a technical choice—it’s a storytelling tool. The way light wraps around a subject, casts shadows, or highlights emotion can completely transform the mood of an image. So how do you decide between the controlled elegance of studio light and the organic beauty of natural light? Well, whether you are doing family, baby, senior, headshots, or maternity photos, I want to give you some insight on the difference between studio and outdoor settings so that you can achieve the portraits of your dreams!

Outdoor portraits

There’s something undeniably special about photographing people in natural light. The sun, the sky, the breeze—they all come together to create portraits that feel alive, authentic, and emotionally rich. Outdoor sessions offer a kind of freedom that studio walls can’t replicate. Whether it’s a golden hour glow or the soft light of an overcast afternoon, nature provides a dynamic canvas that brings out the best in every subject.

Natural light is soft, warm, and emotionally rich. It’s especially beautiful during golden hour—the hour after sunrise or before sunset—when the sun casts a gentle glow that flatters skin tones and adds a dreamy atmosphere. Natural light is perfect for outdoor sessions or lifestyle shoots where you want a candid, organic feel. It allows the environment to become part of your story, whether that’s a cozy backyard, a sunlit field, or a favorite park. However, natural light can be unpredictable. Weather, time of day, and location all play a role, and sometimes the sun doesn’t cooperate. Still, when it does, the results are magical.

More on outdoor portraits

I often schedule sessions during golden hour—the hour just after sunrise or before sunset—when the sun is low and warm, casting a soft, dreamy light that makes skin tones glow and eyes sparkle. Even on cloudy days, the diffused light creates a gentle, even tone that’s perfect for portraits. And, I’m all for stormy skies! Theyre actually incredible and make your portraits so dramatic and beautiful!  If the sun is high, I’ll guide you into open shade to avoid harsh shadows and keep your features beautifully lit.

Outdoor sessions also allow for movement, spontaneity, and storytelling. Kids can run, couples can dance, and families can interact in ways that feel natural and joyful. The environment becomes part of your story—whether it’s a quiet field, a forest trail, or your own backyard. These sessions aren’t just about capturing how you look; they’re about capturing how you feel in that moment.

So if you’re considering a portrait session, don’t underestimate the power of natural light. It’s not just a technical choice—it’s an emotional one. It invites warmth, connection, and authenticity. And when you pair that with the beauty of the outdoors, you get portraits that are timeless, heartfelt, and uniquely yours.

The beauty in the outdoors

One thing I love about outdoor photography is how endless the story can be. The slight changes in the background add to the story and create such diversity in the session. Friends will ask, “Where was this taken?” or “You look so happy here!” because the setting adds depth and story to the photo. Whether it’s a sun-drenched field, a forest trail, or your favorite city corner, outdoor portraits invite people into your world. They’re not just beautiful—they’re alive, and they carry the emotion, energy, and connection of the day they were captured. That’s what makes them unforgettable.

Studio Portraits

Studio portraits, on the other hand, offers precision and control. In a studio setting, I can adjust every aspect of the lighting—its intensity, direction, and color—to create exactly the look you want. This is ideal for professional headshots, branding sessions, or stylized portraits where consistency and polish are key. Studio lighting also allows for creative freedom, whether you’re going for dramatic shadows or a clean, high-key look. Plus, it’s weather-proof, so your session isn’t affected by rain or clouds. While studio sessions can feel more posed, I always work to bring warmth and authenticity into the space so your personality shines through.

Inside a studio session

For every session, I first think about studio vs. outdoor portraits. It all depends on the session and your desires! However, as a lifestyle photographer, I absolutely love natural lighting. So, if you love a studio session for the controlled environment and the solid or controlled backgrounds- a particular set up such as boho, baby’s first birthday backgrounds, living room, nursery etc. I always still include natural lighting from outdoors when possible! The mixture of natural light and studio lighting is often perfect for all kinds of portraits.

Studio sessions are surprisingly freeing. Without the distractions of the outdoors, you get to focus inward—on expression, emotion, and connection. It’s intimate, intentional, and often deeply personal. During a child or baby studio session, I really get the chance to get to know them! This is where we are able to be intentional about the portraits in this small but might space. (It’s not actually small, but you get my drift!)

In-Home Sessions

In-home sessions are a beautiful way to capture your family in the most authentic setting—your own space. There’s no need for perfect decor or spotless floors; what matters is the warmth, the connection, and the everyday magic that unfolds naturally. Whether it’s cuddling on the couch, baking in the kitchen, or playing in the backyard, these moments tell your real story. The light pouring through your windows, the comfort of familiar surroundings, and the genuine interactions make for portraits that feel deeply personal and timeless. It’s not about perfection—it’s about presence.

Oh! and just like outdoor photography, these portraits have a way of becoming more than just decor—they become conversation starters, memory keepers, and emotional anchors. When family and friends visit your home, they’ll be drawn to the images on your walls, not just because they’re beautiful, but because they tell your story in the most personal way. Whether it’s a candid moment in the kitchen, a snuggle on the couch, or a giggle in the hallway, these portraits reflect the heart of your home. They spark laughter, nostalgia, and connection. And the best part? They remind everyone who walks through your door that love lives here.

we both know!

My sister and I have always done child-care and I absolutely understand how hard it can be to get just 2 children out the door for a simple run to Walmart! On some days, what should take 1 hour, turns into 3. So, if you feel like a simple in-home session would be perfect for your little family, it WILL be perfect and beautiful in every way! I combine both natural and studio lighting to create the perfect blend for your walls.

What makes indoor portraits special isn’t just the lighting or the gear—it’s the atmosphere. It’s the moment you relax into yourself, laugh unexpectedly, or see your reflection and think, “Wow, that’s really me.” So, if you’ve ever wondered what an indoor session is like, know this: it’s not stiff or sterile—it’s a celebration of you. A celebration of the simple things in life.

However, on the contrary, if you know that your kids need a place they can run around, wild and free, then an outdoor session might just be right for you! If you want headshots that look uniquely different from all your co-workers, maybe consider changing it up with outdoor! If you feel like you just need the fresh air because it will distract you from the certain awkwardness you may feel from having portraits taken, then outdoor might just be the best thing for you! But don’t worry. Both would turn out better than you expect!

On the Contrary

However, on the contrary, if you know that your kids need a place they can run around, wild and free, then an outdoor session might just be right for you! If you want headshots that look uniquely different from all your co-workers, maybe consider changing it up with outdoor! But don’t worry. Both would turn out better than you expect!

Both indoor and outdoor portraits will look incredible on the walls of your home! They just tell a different story and the choice is all yours!

Final Thoughts

Outdoor vs. Studio Photography? Each offers a unique mood and style, and the choice can dramatically affect the final look of your photos. As a photographer, I see lighting not just as a technical element, but as a storytelling tool. It shapes emotion, highlights connection, and brings your personality to life.

So, don’t let “outdoor vs. studio photography” stress you out! It really depends on your vision. If you’re looking for something relaxed, emotional, and natural, outdoor light is a beautiful choice. If you want something refined, bold, or creatively styled, studio light might be the better fit. And sometimes, the best results come from blending both approaches.

As your photographer, my goal is to help you feel confident and comfortable, no matter the lighting. Whether we’re chasing sunlight or crafting the perfect studio setup, I’ll guide you every step of the way to make sure your portraits reflect who you truly are. I’m here to make sure you walk away not just with stunning images, but with a memory that feels just as meaningful!
