From Strangers to Best Friends – The Story of My Favorite Family Session

the Family Session that Sparked a beautiful Friendship

Never in a million years did I ever think I would become best friends with a client! It started as just another family photoshoot—sunlight filtering through the trees, giggles echoing between poses, and me behind the lens, doing what I love. Family photos and friendship. I never expected that in the middle of capturing this sweet duo, I’d meet someone who would become one of the most important people in my life. This wasn’t just a session—it was the beginning of a friendship that grew from shared laughter, spontaneous moments, and a surprising connection that felt instantly familiar. Sometimes, the best stories aren’t the ones we plan to tell—they’re the ones that unfold when we least expect them.

The unlikely scenerio

It all started at…. Walmart! In the isle, we were both searching for Ramen noodles! Yes. I met my best friend while both of us were looking for Ramen. That’s how I know we are like the same person! She was with her sweet little boy and I felt the Holy Spirit say to go to her, and give her a business card for family photos.

Now, I’m not typically a bold person and I am somewhat shy and timid naturally. So, I deeply wrestled with going up to a complete stranger in public. In fact, every time I do this, I quite literally want to crawl into a hole! It can be scary and a bit intimidating because…. who knows what the other person is thinking or how they will react! But I did it anyway because… what’s the worst that could happen.

And when I did it, well… she was instantly so excited to meet me and told me she has been wanting to do family photos and was actively looking for a photographer! So, I guess I was just right on time. We exchanged contact information and about 3 weeks later, we scheduled that photoshoot to land on her birthday week.

The Session

We went back and forth on if we should reschedule our session because the weather showed a forecast of rain and thunderstorms. However, I had a vision for the session already and it included cloudy, stormy skies. So, the rain and thunderstorm, kind of excited me more for the session. But I was a little concerned that the rain would be too heavy to actually get good photos. However, it was perfect. We took a chance and met at our session location. It was a beautiful day! Before I started taking portraits of her and her little boy, we talked for at least 20 minutes just getting to know each other.

Somehow, we ended up talking about our dream for the future and I was about to say, ” I want to adopt a lot of children from all over the world, and I want to homeschool my 15 children and for my husband and I to be a photographer-videographer team!”

But, before I could finish my sentence, she stopped me at the word “adopt” and she said ” Adoption!! I have a big heart for adoption and foster care and that is my DREAM!!!” She was just as excited as I was and that’s when I knew, she could be my person.

It rained

At first, ” Ok maybe I got a little ahead of myself by choosing the do this in the rain.”. I thought about how amazing they looked and that they might not want the rain ruining the session. Especially since we had the opportunity to reschedule the session instead. But the truth is, the rain made these photos SO much more beautiful than what I could have imagined. So, instead of running for cover, we embraced the moment—mud, laughter, and all. The mom danced barefoot in puddles, completely unbothered by the mess, and I found myself smiling behind the lens, realizing we were kindred spirits. That day, the rain didn’t just add magic to the photos—it revealed a friendship waiting to happen. We matched in spirit, in spontaneity, and in joy. And just like that, a rainy shoot became the beginning of something beautiful. She became my person.

When I delivered this gallery, I was so excited. I said to myself, “Wow Jesus, these photos glow as if your presence is right there in the background with them. There’s just something about these two.” When She received her gallery, her first text message to me was ” PRESENCE OF JESUS!!!!!” Coincidence? No way. We literally were kindred spirits from the ramen noodle isle to the ” presence of Jesus” and beyond! To this day, we know each other so well its actually hilarious and I never thought that a client could become my best franndddd.

Not only did I make a best friend, I gained the sweetest God-baby in the world. Her little boy. He calls me Titi Ash.

jUST LOOK AT THAT FACE

There’s a little boy with the brightest eyes and the kind of laugh that makes the world feel softer. He calls me “Titi Ash” now—a name so simple, yet so sacred to me. It’s not just a nickname; it’s a symbol of belonging, of love freely given and received. Every time he says it, I feel the warmth of something I’ve prayed for my whole life: chosen family.

Growing up, my circle was small, but God, in His quiet and faithful way, has been weaving together the relationships my heart needed. This little boy, with muddy shoes and a heart full of wonder, is part of that tapestry. His joy, his trust, his affection—they remind me that the Lord sees the deepest desires of our hearts and answers them in ways more beautiful than we imagined.

Being “Titi Ash” is more than a title. It’s a promise fulfilled. It’s the echo of grace in the everyday. And its proof that family isn’t always born—it’s chosen, cherished, and divinely placed. Sometimes it’s within friend groups, sometimes it begins during child-hood and you grow up together, other times, it begins in the Walmart isle right before closing.

The unexpected

I never imagined that after all the heartbreak, Jesus would answer a prayer I’d buried deep—one I wasn’t even sure I had the courage to keep hoping for. But He saw it. He held it. And in His perfect timing, He gave me a best friend. Not just any friend, but one who feels like home. His faithfulness is quiet, steady, and full of surprises. And this friendship is proof that even the most tender prayers are heard, remembered, and answered with love.

More than photography

Being a family photographer has never just been about snapping pretty pictures. For me, it’s a sacred space where connection happens—where strangers become friends, and sometimes, friends become family. Every session is a doorway into someone’s world, and I count it a privilege to be invited in. I’ve laughed with toddlers, cried with parents, and stood in awe of the quiet beauty that lives in everyday moments.

I truly love meeting new people—their stories, their quirks, their chaos and joy. It fills me up in ways I can’t explain. And sometimes, in the middle of all that beautiful mess, God shows up in the most unexpected ways. Like the day I met my best friend during a rainy shoot. I never thought I’d be gifted a friendship like that, not after all the disappointment. But Jesus saw the prayer I whispered through tears, the longing I tucked away, and He answered it with laughter, mud, and a soul that matched mine.

This work is my calling. It’s where I see the Lord’s faithfulness unfold—not just in the images, but in the relationships, the healing, and the joy. Photography is my lens, but connection is my heart. And I’ll never stop being amazed at how He uses both to write stories I never saw coming. He used family photos, to bring me friendship.

On the other side of your yes

We live in a world where scrolling has replaced soul-searching and curated feeds often mask loneliness, giving us the illusion of connection.  If you’re feeling hesitant, isolated, or unsure of where you belong, I want to encourage you: don’t let fear or past hurt keep you from the beauty of genuine connection. Sometimes, the very thing your heart is longing for is waiting just beyond the discomfort. And when you walk with Jesus, you’re never walking blind. He sees your need for belonging, your desire to be known, and your quiet prayers for companionship. He’s already preparing hearts to meet yours.

I never imagined that a rainy photoshoot would lead me to a soul-level friendship. But it did—because I stayed open. Because I showed up. And because God is faithful to meet us in the places we least expect with blessings we didn’t even know to ask for. So take the step. Say yes to the coffee invite. Smile at the stranger. Start the conversation. You never know what God is orchestrating behind the scenes. Real friendship might be waiting on the other side of your yes. We said yes. And this year, 2025, we have been blessed to make some of the most incredible memories!

Friendship is one of the ways God whispers, “You are loved.” It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it. Whether you’re surrounded by a tribe or still searching for your people, know this: you were made for connection. And the right hearts will find you when you’re ready to be found.

Speaking of making memories!

If you’re looking for a photographer who captures the candid moments and makes sure that everyone is having a fun time, I’d love to be in your corner! But more than that, I love coffee dates! If we share a vibe, I’d love to connect with you, take beautiful portraits and maybe even become great friends 🙂 My new slogan is “family photos and friendship!”
